About Cork

With a population just under 130,000, Cork is one of the larger cities in Ireland. While not particularly well known outside of Ireland, Cork does have some notable attributes. For one, it’s a leading innovator in synthetic biology. Cork has several dozen startups, and a solid incubator to support them as well. The Ignite incubator provides €5,000 to €15,000 of seed money to around 10 startups each year. While finding a decent short-term place to work in Cork was difficult in the past, the office culture is beginning to change. In the last few years, multiple cosy coworking spaces have cropped up around town.

That’s one reason Cork is beginning to lure professionals away from Dublin. Another benefit to living in Cork is that it boasts a lower cost of living than Dublin. Many Irish also believe that Cork offers it inhabitants a better lifestyle than Dublin.

Much of Cork’s charm comes from its diverse architecture. Countless architecturally significant buildings built from medieval to modern times stand in the city center. The city center is also walkable and hosts a diverse mix of modern shopping centers along with family owned local shops. Cork is also home to some of the country’s leading department stores.

If shopping ’til you drop doesn’t appeal to you, however, fear not. Cork offers interesting economic opportunities for those that feel earning money is more interesting than spending it. Cork’s Ferrero factory manufactures nearly half of the world’s Tic Tac mints. As a result, the factory employs many locals. Cork also has a deep harbor for those interested in becoming involved in the import/export business. Regardless of your specific business endeavor, the coworking scene in Cork is friendly and welcoming to new professionals.
