The capital of the province of Gelderland, Arnhem has a rich and eventful past, partly reflected in a number of monumental buildings. Set in the heart of green surroundings, the town is contained by the Veluwe on one side and the forelands on the other. The city of Arnhem is known to many Dutch people by the spectacular Burgers' Zoo. However, Arnhem also attracts visitors with plenty of other things to see, such as fascinating museums, fantastic shopping, and excellent restaurants. Many shopping fans will be happy where fashion is concerned, as Arnhem is Holland's number one fashion city and possesses its own “fashion quarter.”
First mentioned around AD 893, the city occupies the site of the old Roman settlement of Arenacum and, thanks to its advantageous position on the Rhine, has been an important place of trade since the Middle Ages. Evidence of this early strategic importance can still be seen throughout Arnhem's old city center. For remote workers or enterprise teams, Arnhem is a great place to set up business as it is currently experiencing an extended period of sustained economic growth. The city as the regional capital has strategic importance underlined by a regional transport hub with a high-speed train between Amsterdam-Frankfurt, different motorways, a regional airport that can be reached in 45 minutes and a national airport as well.
