About Omaha
The largest city in Nebraska, Omaha is awash in urban chic with a touch of home-style charm sitting on the Missouri River in the county of Douglas. Within the Greater Omaha area there are almost 1.3 million souls living in what is often referred to as part of the Silicon Prairie. Having a pioneer history dating from 1854, today it is home to the headquarters of 5 Fortune 500 companies and a further 5 Fortune 1000 companies. This is where the "Reuben sandwich" - a concoction of corned beef, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut plus Thousand Island dressing and grilled between slices of rye bread - was thought of by a local chef, as well as that life saver of many known as the "TV dinner" by Omaha's Carl Swanson Co in 1954.
You will never go thirsty if you are into craft beers as Omaha is overflowing with local breweries to indulge your passion for some hops. One of the best cities in America for its diverse music scene, you won't have to go far to catch some great tunes with the annual Maha Music Festival thumping out the music in Stinson Park. For the gaming junkies there is the "Beercade" to play all of your favorite retro arcade games, whilst drinking a beer or two. You can stay in kiddy mode and go to the Henry Doorly Zoo that has the largest geodesic dome in the country as well as the largest indoor rainforest to get up close and personal with some creatures. Make sure you take time out to leisurely stroll through the downtown area for its trendy bars, funky restaurants (steak-houses feature prominently) and eclectic boutique shopping. There are museums for those that like to use their grey brain matter and numerous art galleries are dotted around the town for the arty crowd.
If you like to share your food with creatures, then make sure you dine at the Alpine Inn where the floorshow entails feeding the stray cats and raccoons.
