Close to Minneapolis, the little town of Minnetonka is a great base to explore the Twin Cities, without the high cost of a downtown hotel. It is home to Cargill, the country's largest privately owned company, the headquarters of Carlson Companies and United Healthcare, the state's largest publicly owned company. The city's name is derived from the Dakota Indian word "mni tanka" (great water) as part of the city includes the eastern tip of Lake Minnetonka, one of the largest lakes in Minnesota.
Originally cloaked in a wooded wilderness, Minnetonka underwent a period of extensive farming and industrialization, before becoming what it is today, predominantly a suburban city. For some historical architecture there is the Charles H Burwell House on the National Register of Historic Places and a small number of Victorian homes from the 1800s to check out. If you want some sand between your toes there is Shady Oak Beach with clear spring fed waters where you can swim, canoe or try your hand at catching a fish. Libbs Lake Beach is the place to rub shoulders with the locals.
Out of town you must check out the Minnehaha Falls and the Mississippi River.
