This is no city, but the swanky suburb of Melbourne that many people would like to be able to say they live in. It is the dress circle with some of the most costly residential real estate in Victoria. A mere 4 km south-east of the CBD of Melbourne, it is where Chapel Street reigns as the fashion/arty world overflowing with trendy restaurants, elegant night clubs and awash in funky outdoor cafes where the beautiful people flock in their designer clothes.
Once a predominantly LGBT community, it is now a playground for the wealthy and well heeled. It is where you will find the elite schooling institutions of Melbourne Girls Grammar, Melbourne Grammar (boys only) and Melbourne High School, as well as 2 of Victoria's oldest primary schools, Christ Church Grammar and South Yarra Primary School. First settled around the 1830's by Europeans, it was a popular place for the wealthy citizens of Melbourne to establish their residences outside of the bustle of Melbourne.
Local landmarks include The Jam Factory building that is now an upmarket shopping precinct and the Prahran Market, which is a restaurant chef's haunt as well as the locals, for fresh produce. There are numerous Heritage listed houses to gawk at such as Como House (1847), Richmond House (1859) and Airlie House, as well as the stunning features of the clusters of Victorian terrace houses dotted around. Art deco residences can be found overlooking the murky brown waters of the Yarra River. For chill-out time, there is Fawkner Park, Como Gardens and Greville Botanic Gardens to meander around in a daze.
