About Sechelt

According to the Canadian statistics, Sechelt is the land of over 45 year olds and that includes many retirees that have fled here from all across Canada.  So beware of walking frames and slow erratic drivers when in town.  Originally home to the aboriginal people of the Sechelt Nation who lived a life of fishing, hunting and trading, it wasn't until the 19th Century that European settlers moved in.  It is laid back, scenic, hugged by mountains with a touch of the bohemian vibe because of the number of artists that hide out in the stunning surrounds.  From chic bed & breakfasts to cute cottages and even camping, your bed situation can be sorted out easily.

Think bootlegging and take a kayak or a canoe to nearby Smuggler's Cove where it was a discrete haven of illicit happenings during the Prohibition years.  Or take your floating palace up the Sechelt Inlet and spy on a few deer hiding on the banks or dolphins playing in the water.  The beaches are great for a swim or time out sun worshipping, whilst the avid angler will chafe at the bit to get onto the ocean for a touch of fishing.  There is even trout fishing to be had at Trout, Ruby or Sakinaw Lakes.  This is definitely the place to indulge your passion for some cold-water diving or if you don't know how, take some lessons from the National Geographic lauded dive center in Sechelt.  For those that wear white golf shoes, there is the Sechelt Golf and Country Club or the Pender Harbor Golf Club to swan around. The twitters and the hikers will be in heaven on the Suncoaster Trail Route where there is 33 km of trails to explore.  For the gentle walker, you can leisurely crawl around the Davis Bay waterfront stopping off for a refreshment when required at one of the cafes. In the winter months there is hard-core cross-country skiing or snowshoeing to keep you occupied on the trails at the Dakota Ridge Winter Recreation Area.

For a cultural hit go to the House of Héwhíwus (House of Chiefs) Museum or take in one of the quirky art galleries.
