About Sintra

Tucked away in the foothills of the Sintra Mountains, Sintra is a royal sanctuary of pastel colored villas with the odd palace or two amidst a fairytale forest. In the coastal region of Estoril, Sintra is picturesque with jaw dropping panoramic coastline views.  Even Lord Byron was impressed with Sintra, as he referred to it as a "glorious garden".

Smothered in Roman archeological remains, there are quaint old villages and churches to lose yourself in, with brilliant wines to scoff when the occasion calls for a sip or two. Sintra is a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of the number of ancient buildings: Pena National Palace, Sintra National Palace, Quinta de Regaleira, Monserrate Palace, Castle of the Moors, and Seteais Palace.  Named after the moon goddess by the Moors, it really is a mythical village that has charmed many of the world's greatest poets, aristocrats, philosophers and conquerors.

You will be astounded at the architectural mix of Arab, Portuguese and Roman styles in the castles and palaces, fascinated when looking through the Regional Museum or the Museum of Modern Art and enchanted when walking through the Pena Park where black swans grace the ponds.  You can hike through the maze of Pena Park that is the 200 hectares surrounding the Pena Palace, or see how the rich lived in the 19th Century with a gawk at the Quinta da Regaleira gothic mansion that was owned by the once richest man in Portugal.

When you are on sensory overload you should head into the town center for some traditional fare at one of the many restaurants, or burn a small hole in your credit card having a touch of retail therapy.
