About Phnom Penh

Phnom Penh, the wild west of South East Asia and capital city of Cambodia. A former hub for both the Khmer Empire and French colonial empire, Cambodia has a rich but checkered history - made famous in the Western press for genocide and the after-effects of land mines.

But these days, Phnom Penh is a popular destination on the backpacker trail where you can order your pizzas "extremely happy" if you're feeling brave, pick up some heavy silver jewellery at the Russian Market (nope, we have no idea why it's called that - there's nothing Russian about it!) or saunter around the ornate Royal Palace. For a reminder of Phnom Penh's dark past, visit The Killing Fields or the Tuol Svay Pray Genocide Museum (a former high school used by the Khmer Rouge as a notorious prison).

Although we haven't heard many reports of Phnom Phen being a popular coworking hub just yet, a local startup scene is starting to emerge. Plus it's a handy location for a visa run if you're living in Saigon.
