About Christchurch

The departure place for the Antarctic for the last 100 years, Christchurch is slowly recovering from the devastating earthquakes of 2010 and again in 2011.  Once known as "The Garden City", the city's Hagley Park is the 3rd biggest park in the world. Christchurch was only declared a city - the first in New Zealand - due to the fact that it had a cathedral.  Historically the first coffee shop, post office and the goal were all sitting side by side in the Market Place.  One must wonder if it was for the benefit of the guards or the inmates.  Even as far back as 1900, the iconic Avon River running through the middle of the city with its riverbanks dressed in weeping willows was the main feature of postcards, just as this picturesque vision still is today. Sitting on the east coast of the south island of New Zealand, Christchurch has the oldest bridge in New Zealand.

As the city slowly rebuilds itself you can see innovative businesses and shops popping up making it a vibrant and enterprising place to be.  What is termed "gap filler" projects are appearing everywhere, where vacant sites are being turned into creative spaces to engage and entertain the locals and visitors.

There is a rich history and cultural heritage with masses of green spaces to explore or relax in.  You can grab a bicycle and take a tour around the city quite easily or for the lazy ones it is possible to take a double-decker bus with a running commentary.  For those with very thick wallets you can even go up in the blue skies for a bird's eye view from a helicopter.  For the history buffs you can stroll around the Air Force Museum of New Zealand or the Canterbury Museum, or if you want to find out about the earthquakes then visit Quake City.  The International Antarctic Center is where you can learn about the cold and icy way of living and the wildlife that can cope in the freezing temperatures.  For some culture, go to the Court Theater or if you want to come face to face with the passionate and scary Maori "haka", head to Ko Tane where you get to pig out at a "hangi" as well.
