About Rock Hill

The largest city in York County of South Carolina, Rock Hill has a population of about 72,937. It sits 40km from Charlotte and 110km from Columbia with scenic river views of the Catawba River. Home to plenty of nature trails for those who like to get outdoors into the wild yonder, there are also a plethora of cafes, bars and restaurants for those who prefer to indulge in more sedate adventures, such as sipping espresso whilst languidly reclining in a casual atmosphere. There are 31 parks for promenading and its historic downtown area has plenty of old buildings to gawk at. Despite having settlers roaming around its land as early as the 1830s and 1840s, it wasn't until the Charlotte and South Carolina Railroad hit the town that the village began to grow into a town and it was incorporated in 1870. Today its home to 3 colleges including the Winthrop University that was founded in 1886 and has on average 6,000 students annually. With this youthful tech savvy horde within the city, it's no wonder coworking venues are overflowing with creative minds and hyped up enthusiasm.

South Carolina's tech sector contributed around 2,500 jobs to the state economy in one year alone. The state has about 122,000 tech workers walking its streets and the state's government is increasingly focusing on shifting its economy from one that mostly makes things to one that designs them. In an effort to grow its tech niche, the state is committing to train and educate a workforce that will be ready to fill the needs of every company that chooses to set up shop in South Carolina. It's faced with a chicken-and-egg scenario, as there are only a handful of large tech employers in South Carolina.

Coworking venues are playing a vital role as a stepping-stone in the ecosystem where accelerator programs and pitch competitions are trying to take fledgling startups to the next level.
