About Erlangen

Still in its infancy, Erlangen was named in April 2017 by the German Government as the city host for the digital hub for health operating under the umbrella brand "de:hub". Each host city has been nominated for its industry-specific research and educational institutions, a good startup community and local network of influencers, where entrepreneurs can tap into the local expertise by creating common spaces that encourage innovation.

Grab a bus or a train from either Munich or Berlin and head to the university town of Erlangen that is home to the Friedrich-Alexander University and the Siemens Company. Sitting in Bavaria near Nuremberg, over one third of its inhabitants (100,000) work for Siemens, whilst another third work for the university or are students attending the scholarly institution that specializes in all things to do with medicine. You won't need to panic if you fall ill whilst in this bustling and buzzing city. There is also a large research Institute of the Fraunhofer Society and the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light plus leading businesses in the health business sector.

Swamped by locals pushing bicycle pedals or catching punctual buses, not many cars appear on the streets, as there are many designated car-free and pedestrian only zones. The city is easy to navigate having well organized bicycle roads and only small distances to cover, so if you don't want to join the bicycle or bussing clans, you can always pound the pavement in walking shoes.

When you get time to get your brain out of making earth shattering healthy startups, there are plenty of sights to check out such as the House of Art, the city museum or the Botanischer Garden with its plants and trees from all over the world. If sightseeing doesn't do it for you then make sure you get to one of the city's annual festivals from its International Comic Salon to the International Film Festival for Horror, Thriller, Science Fiction and Obscure Films. Or, you could squander your time on a bratwurst and beer marathon.
