About Bergen

Tech startups are hitting the limelight to transform the economic structure of Bergen and beyond, due to the oil price dip in Norway. The second largest city in Norway sitting on the west coast, Bergen is one of the cities in Norway that have had to face serious problems with unemployment and an economy in recession, since oil prices plummeted in 2014.

Surrounded by fjords and mountains, you will find gorgeous colorful wooden houses on the old wharf to gawk at, plus a funicular to go up Fløyen Mountain for fantastic views or to venture onto hiking trails. An enchanting city where Edvard Grieg, the famous composer once lived, Bergen is surrounded by 7 hills and 7 fjords and will provide you with plenty of sights to see when you need to chill-out. There are ferryboats to jump on and brilliant art museums to meander around. The buzzy bar scene and nightlife will give you something to do at night, if you don't want to work by the gas lamp.

The Norwegian government stepped in early to provide startups with support avenues such as grants and financial investment avenues that are now determined by tracking the different phases of startups to get them into an industrious mode, rather than a sleepy slow attitude. Numerous startup events are held to encourage Norway's startups to "talk" to the rest of the world and to create synergies. It is however expensive to set up a company in Norway and the country is a tad on the new side to advancing tech startups, compared to its Scandinavian neighbors.

The majority of Bergen's startups have a close tie between new tech innovation and traditional industries that enter a big market and empower the oil and marine industry on a local level. The coworking scene tends to be divided by industry sector connecting startups and project teams from big companies more closely, to enable direct communication. The universities are also reflecting the startup scene with more subjects in place such as enterprise management and business administration.
