About Moncton
The town where Butch Cassidy's outlaw group was captured and consequently escaped in 1901, Moncton has seen some "very important people" action: the birthplace of Quentin Tarantino, counter culture author Kurt Vonnegaut who inspired a generation of hippies and George Dempster who invented the first garbage dumpster, Moncton was also the place where the first black Federal Judge, William Henry Hastie was born. Moncton is where music first came down from the hills and is considered to be the "cradle of country music". Both Dolly Parton and the Everly Brothers began their careers here. Despite Elvis Presley not being in Moncton in person, it was here that a record executive first heard a song of his playing in a store in Moncton.
Sitting in the Petitcodiac River Valley, Moncton is in the heart of the Maritime Provinces. A bilingual city with a diverse cultural community, it is the perfect city to base yourself in for a bit of exploration around the area. On its doorstep there are some idyllic beaches and stunning scenery. You can be on the Fundy or the Acadian coast during the day and get back to town in time for a long decadent dinner. There is a lot to amuse oneself with in town, especially if you are there during the World Wine & Food Expo. If not, there are plenty of restaurants dishing up local produce and cafes to satisfy the snacking hunger pain or to grab a caffeine shot. Live performances are to be seen at The Capitol Theater, a restored vaudeville venue. You can pat a four-legged creature at the Magnetic Hill Zoo or splash around in the water at Magic Mountain Water Park. Centennial Park is where to take a picnic feast and chill out, or the Casino New Brunswick is for some people a bottomless wishing well. You can take an arduous hike in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park and get curious at the "Musée Acadien de l’Université de Moncton" where there are over 42,000 objects and photographs on display that is one of the largest Acadian artifact collections in the world.
