Recent Reviews in Santa Marta
Perched on the Caribbean Sea in the north of Colombia, Santa Marta is a busy port city that was the first Spanish settlement in Colombia. A tourist hub, it's considered to be a "Touristic, Cultural and Historic District". It's the 4th largest urban city in the Caribbean Region of Columbia with its history dating back to 1525. Santa Marta is the oldest surviving city and the 2nd oldest in South America, so it oozes atmosphere and charm. It's located about 992km from the town of Bogota and is bordered on the north and the west by the Caribbean with an economy based in port activities, fishing, trade and agriculture (think coffee, cocoa, cassava and bananas). The gateway to get to the Tayrona National Natural Park and treks to the Lost City (Teyuna) an archaeological site in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountains, it's also home to coworking venues for its intrepid and innovative souls.
Colombia does have a rapidly expanding startup scene with significant government investment in tech industries. Large incubators can be found in Medellin and Bogota and there are numerous startups making headlines such as "SiembraViva" that is fighting the urban-rural divide by connecting farmers to urban consumers. Another startup, "Viajala", has put all of Colombia's domestic airlines on a single user-friendly platform so that its users can get the best deal.
Coworking venues have become the go-to places for the inventive souls of Santa Marta where they can get some work done before heading off to play in the mountains.
