A laid-back quaint little fishing town, San Juan del Sur is a beach community of souls where you - at least the females will - get the eye candy of bare chested tanned surfers strolling along the street, whilst the guys can have the joy of ogling their beers in one of the many bars dotted around. Sitting 140km from Managua, the area is a playground magnet for world wandering surfers, foreign tourists and quite a few Nicaraguan families.
Sitting in a half moon crescent of coastline cloaked in brown sugar colored sand, the golden stretches of world-class surfing enclaves sit just north or south out of the town. It is a city of clapboard Victorian houses and unnamed streets with a looming statue of Christ on a nearby hillside. You won't find stoplights and most locations are related to a landmark instead of a physical address. The locals are friendly and the town is home to many expats from around the world.
Surfing isn't the only thing that San Juan del Sur is known for, as you can get stuck into some extreme sports, go zip lining or hiking. This is the base to explore Nicaragua's southern Pacific beaches. The dining options are endless with quaint cafes for endless espressos and funky boutiques to browse where you can rub the numbers off your credit cards. There is a dynamic nightlife scene to keep you awake all hours of the night if you want. For those that don't know how to surf, this is the place to learn to master the waves. For a blissful day take a cruise on a catamaran and swim in deserted bays.
San Juan del Sur is where you can take that long lingering breath and let your creative juices flow in a little bit of paradise.
