Believed to have been home to humans from the period 25,000 to 35,000 BC, Krabi sits in the southern province of Thailand on the Andaman Sea. Think of the movie "Avatar" and its otherworldly landscape and this is Krabi. Limestone karsts rise from the depths of the ocean floor reaching for the skies, whilst mangrove forests cling to the shoreline of crystal clear blue water that disappears into the horizon and blazing crimson sunsets light up the sky each evening. Hot days with balmy evenings give Krabi a laid-back vibe where you will find over 200 islands floating in a seascape wonderland. The township of Krabi is quite large where there are endless white sand beaches, lush tropical jungle areas and a vibrant yet chilled out restaurant, cafe and bar scene.
You will have to hire a motorbike or car to get to the caves and pristine waters of Railay Beaches, but it is definitely worth it. Cut off from the world, here you will find some long tail boats lolling in the shallows and beachfront bars to sip a cocktail whilst swirling your feet in the warm sand. Rent a long tail boat and play explorer for the day amongst the islands when you can jump off the boat onto your own private beach cove. Go to Phi Phi Islands where the move "The Beach" was filmed, or explore Thung Teao Forest Natural Park and find the Crystal Lagoon (aka Emerald Pool) complete with waterfall. Visit the hilltop caves in the jungle where the monks live and worship at the Tiger Cave Temple. Make certain that you visit the footprint of Buddha, despite the fact that you will have to walk up 1,237 steps to get to it. Relax in the Klong Thom Hot Springs where the temperature gets up to 40 degrees.
