About Iskandar Puteri

A city in the Johor Bahru District of Johor in Malaysia, Iskandar Puteri sits at the southern end of the Malay Peninsula and lays claim to being the southernmost city on the peninsular. Historically an old Malay fishing village and forest sitting at the mouth of the Tebrau Strait, it's locally referred to as "Sempit Puteri". Over its long history the town has had numerous name changes but the current Sultan of Johor returned it to its rightful name in 2017. The city is awash in students and graduates, as its home to numerous universities, in fact too many to name. Somewhat a tourist hub, one of its main attractions is "Legoland Malaysia" that is integrated with the Legoland Water Park where you can literally spend hours pretending to be a kid again, if you don't have any kids to drag along with you as an excuse. Coworking in Iskandar Puteri has become a reality despite the fact that the city is not yet a tech hub per se.

There are 3 main hubs for tech/startup gurus in Malaysia, that of Kuala Lumpur and Penang, with Johor silently bubbling away. The city has an entrepreneurial culture that is transparent with work colleagues mingling friendship with creativity and a generous attitude when it comes to sharing of ideas and knowledge. Startups are scattered throughout the area and Johor does need more intrepid souls plus more support organizations to really bounce out of its brewing stage.

With many locals wishing to start something of their own, Malaysian entrepreneurship is very much alive and there have been a few extremely successful startups such as Grab, Jobstreet, MOL and Airasia to come out of the country. With this in mind, it's little wonder that coworking venues are hives of activity and collaboration.
