About Maryborough
An historical city sitting on the Mary River in the sunny state of Queensland, Maryborough is cloaked in historical buildings and surrounded by sugar fields and cattle. For the locals it is a beautiful home location, but for the majority of tourists it is a drive-by city on their way further north to the Barrier Reef area of Cairns or Port Douglas, or maybe even further on to where the rainforest meets the sea at Cape Tribulation. It sits 254km from Brisbane, the capital of Queensland. This is no tech hub, as Brisbane's startup scene is still relatively flying under the radar. Coworking appearing in Maryborough is however catering to the demand of the locals who are over trying to work from cafes or at home in isolation.
There is actually quite a bit to see and do in Maryborough such as its "Heritage Walk" when you get to exercise the legs as well as gawk at a few old buildings such as Customs House or poke your nose into the Heritage Museum. There are tanning pits and a wool store amongst other locations, plus a Mary Poppins Statue, as the author P L Travers, was born in the old Union Bank building that was built in 1882.
Queensland's state government has been bolstering its startup community by initiatives such as the HotDesQ program that offers local and international startups $100,000 to move their startups to the state. Plus there is an Advancing Small Business Queensland Strategy offering grants to lure businesses to its capital. Brisbane has a wealth of local talent and a tech scene that is thriving, so it is little wonder that coworking is taking off, even in country towns such as Maryborough.
