About Puerto de la Cruz

Puerto de la Cruz is a popular tourist resort town in the Canary Islands.  In fact its history of international tourism began in the late 18th Century.  There are masses of gorgeous gardens around the city vicinity, which is no doubt why the city is touted as being the place to go for a "peaceful holiday".  With flower gazing being on the top of the to do list, obviously the romantic philosopher Humboldt and the French chemist Berthelot appreciated this green landscape overflowing with tropical fruit plantations in the late 1800s.

You won't be run off your feet dashing from one tourist site to another, as there are only a few historical places to visit. The Old Town with its distinctly Canarian character has cobblestoned streets of colonial style cafes and elegant bars. Take a walk through the old customs house that is now an art museum, meander around the Plaza Del Charco or the quaint harbor, head to the churches la Peña de Francia and San Francisco for some spiritual inspiration, or go to the bustling fishing district of La Ranilla.  But, you can go for a bit of kiddy fun in the swimming pools of Lago Martiánez that were created in 1977 by the artist César Manrique, or spread out on the stunning beaches of Martiánez and Jardín.

Then there is the local wine to be had that was mentioned numerous times in many of Shakespeare's plays.  There are some high-end designer boutiques to damage the bank balance and international restaurants serving up traditional dishes such as the garlic overloaded sauce "Mojo" or the quirkily named "ropa vieja" (aka 'old clothes') that is chicken and beef mixed with potatoes and garbanzo beans.
