A UNESCO World Heritage listed site, Lyon, the home to many a glutton of fine food, is snuggled into the Rhone-Alpes region of France. Over-run by more than 120,000 students, it is the gateway to Europe. From here you can ski the Alps or swim in the waters of the Mediterranean in less than 2 hours, the choice is yours. Home to 22 of the best restaurants in the whole of France, there is more than 40 museums and theaters to meander around with the world's largest urban park, Tete d'Or Park, to promenade in. There are more than 360 foreign capital companies and the world headquarters for companies such as Atari and Renault Trucks, as well as being home to INTERPOL, Euronews and the International Agency for Research on Cancer.

Sitting on the confluence of the Rhone and Saone Rivers, it has 2,000 years of rich history to ponder. Famous for its light festival, "Fete des Lumieres" and its cinematic history, Lyon has plenty of cobbled streets to roam, cultural sights to gawk at and bohemian cafes to hang out in. You can wander around the dense narrow streets and passageways with Renaissance inspired architecture in the Vieux-Lyon area, take a roof-top tour of the Basilica Notre-Dame if you don't suffer from vertigo, check out the murals painted on the apartment blocks at the open-air Musee Garnier, walk around the Roman amphitheater in Fourviere or look at the newly revamped area of the Presqu'île peninsula.

Make sure you tuck into some black truffles however you want them at one of the Michelin starred restaurants in town, or go homey in your food wants and hit one of the "bouchons" where you will get food like granny used to make such as tripe sausages or lambs feet (ok, where is your granny from?). You can grab a dribbling yummy ice cream (think salted caramel cream) in the Old Town or lazily recline with attitude and an espresso on a terrace at one of the many gorgeous cafes in the sunny square of Croix-Rousse.
