About Kamakura

Kamakura is a seaside city located less than an hour south of Tokyo with a population of about 172,302 inhabitants.  Often described in history books as a former de facto capital of Japan, during the Kamakura period it was the seat of the shogunate and of the Regency, plus the political center of medieval Japan.  Today Kamakura is a resort town decked out in dozens of Buddhist Zen temples and Shinto shrines. Kamakura is a bit of a surfing hot spot. It sits on Sagami Bay where on the way to dipping your toes in the water, you can take a gawk at the landmark Kotoku-in Temple's Great Buddha that stands about 13m high.  Often referred to as the Kyoto of Eastern Japan, Kamakura now has coworking venues to tempt its' locals to get off the sandy beaches to do some work.

The success of e-commerce and Internet gurus such as Mixi and Mercari has created a new breed of entrepreneurs.  Many successful founders are now investing in new companies and young people are becoming more attracted to what the startup world can offer, such as freedom in the way of working. Government incentives for startups are bolstering the scene and there is plenty of private funding happening.  Japan is changing its view on entrepreneurship and its tech savvy youth are not afraid of the stigma of failure any more, thanks to the media hype surrounding startups.

For many who love to catch a wave, Kamakura is the perfect destination where they can take their surfboard to their coworking venue for that mid-morning dip in the water, in between brain waves.
