About Portsmouth

Located on the south coast of England, Portsmouth is in the county of Hampshire.  It actually has more people than the city of London living within its city boundaries.  The world's oldest continuously used dry dock; it has been home to some amazing ships such as HMS Warrior, Mary Rose and Lord Nelson's flagship, HMS Victory.  A fortified city during the World War II, it served as an embarkation point for the D-Day landings and headquarters of Dwight D. Eisenhower.  Today it is still the largest dockyard for the Royal Navy.  Historically a prostitution hot spot, as in the 18th Century there were more than 20,000 "ladies of the night" in the city.

You can meander around the waterfront area and take in Portsmouth Harbor where Spinnaker Tower dominates the surrounds, check out the shops, restaurants and bars in the Gunwharf Quays or admire the oldest building in the city "Wymering Manor".   Apparently Charles Dickens was born in Portsmouth and if the rumors are to be believed he returned on numerous occasions endeavoring to find the house in which he was born.  Today it is signposted and sits in Old Commercial Road. The creator of Sherlock Holmes, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle lived in Portsmouth as well and there is an exhibition titled "A Study in Sherlock" at the City Museum that you can have a look at.  Go for a walk along the Nelson Trail through the streets of old Portsmouth where you will see many old buildings and traditional pubs that survived the carnage of World War II bombings.  If none of that appeals, just go to one of the pubs and enjoy a few coldies.
