Sitting in the counties of DuPage and Kane of Illinois, St Charles is about 64km west of Chicago with a population of 33,327 souls running around its streets, slurping espresso in cafes and hanging out in coworking spaces getting industrious. The Fox River runs thought its heart and it's a part of the tri-city area with Geneva and Batavia that are all western suburbs of a similar size and with a relative socioeconomic condition. With a rich history and plenty of rumors of the town being haunted, St Charles has been named one of the top 10 cities for dining, arts, recreational opportunities, unique shopping and entertainment. This is where you will find affordable housing, "good" neighbors, strong public school systems, plenty of green spaces and smiling faces.
St Charles is close enough to Chicago to be included in their startup scene that has a strong talent pipeline from the local MBA and engineering programs with female founders coming to the fore in the playing field, as women run one third of its startups. The biggest cluster of startups appears to be in the historic Merchandise Mart building plus the West Loop area where you will find Google offices plus the food data company "Food Genius" amongst others. Said to be a hot bed for aspiring entrepreneurs, Chicago has about 3,000 startups within its midst with mentors and seed funders such as Genevieve Thiers supporting other women.
Chicago does however have a reputation for not having early-stage capital that many are saying is totally unfounded, as there have been quite a few recent startups funded, such as Uptake (predictive data analytics) and Tempus (clinical data analytics). Coworking venues are overflowing with intrepid souls, highly skilled grads and cheeky food nerds who get excited about the latest menus on offer in the city's restaurants.
