About Brasov

Brasov in Transylvania immediately conjures up images of vampires, Count Dracula and Vlad, The Impaler.  Circled by the Carpathian Mountains, Brasov is all about medieval Saxon walls; vibrant cafes and the amazing Gothic style Black Church.  An old town cloaked in colorful baroque buildings with the ancient and beautiful Piata Sfatului town square.

Top of the list of things to see is definitely the Black Church that was built between 1385 and 1477.  Destroyed by fire in 1689, the only remnant is a plate with the year in Gothic letters of 1477.  One hundred years of restoration later and the church is the largest Gothic one in Europe with the biggest bell in the whole of Romania and the largest organ of 4,000 pipes (dated 1839) in Europe.  It supposedly holds the richest collection of Anatolian carpets in Europe.  Sitting in the old city's square there are plenty of cafes and restaurants to sit at and while away a bit of time if you are so
inclined to, especially if a live concert is in progress.

You can go up Timpa Mountain by cable car, or visit the most beautiful waterfall in the world, Bigar Cascade Falls.  You can walk the narrowest street in Europe, "The Rope Street" (aka Poarta Schei), visit the castle that inspired the story of "Vlad The Impaler" (aka Bran Castle) or go to the "Behind the Walls" alley that was the first defending wall of the city with its 8 towers.  You can get a history lesson at the First Romanian School Museum, or jump on board a Brasov bus tour if you are too lazy to walk around this ancient town.
