About Berkeley

One of the most politically liberal cities in the United States, Berkeley is home to the oldest campus in the University of California system - the University of California, Berkeley.  The city was named after the Irish theologian and poet, George Berkeley and was where in 1964, America's Free Speech Movement began. It has the highest number of bicycle commuters in the country, probably partly due to its mild weather that allows outdoor forays all year round.

Grab a dog on a leash, whether your own or someone else's, and head to the stunning grounds of the wide open spaces at Cesar Chavez Park.  You could even practice your kite flying skills in preparation for the annual Kite Festival held every July.  The Aquatic Park has a series of lagoons and lakes where you can do a touch of canoeing, or for the rev heads, take out a motorboat for a joy ride.   For the young at heart you could join the kids at the Berkeley Adventure Playground where there is "playground" paint to throw around in a free spirited but friendly manner.  The horse races at the Golden Gate Fields has plenty of horse manure around to get the betting urge happening, whilst the Berkeley Rose Garden will have you smelling roses. Do the rounds of the University of California Botanical Garden where you can get to see a New World Desert or a Chinese herb garden, the Lawrence Hall of Science has hands-on activities for little and big kids to play with, or simply soak up some "uni" atmosphere at the University of California, wandering around the campus.
