About San Juan
Discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493, San Juan is a fresh modern Mediterranean city. Most of its heritage has been shaken by earthquakes or flooded. You will have to dodge the cars, as it has the highest density of vehicles per paved mile in the world. Avoiding the people crush may be a bit harder, as it is densely populated and Puerto Rico's capital. Cobblestoned and colorful, the draw cards are the bars, casinos and nightclubs.
Located west of the San Juan River in the Tulum Valley, the city is a sunny grid of wide tree-lined avenues smothered in mosaics and dotted with acacias and moreras that are irrigated by quaint canals. It is a checkerboard layout with four main avenues forming a perfect rectangle so you will never get lost. Set up for those that love to walk and explore, the pedestrian streets of Peatonal Tucumán and Rivadavia are dressed for those that love to shop. For when the plastic has broken your bank account, you can take a dawdle through one of the city's lush parks such as May Park with an artificial lake and island, or 25 May Park where a central fountain gushes and colorful flowers will make you smile.
San Juan is for those that like a vino or two, as 65 percent of the
surrounding agricultural area is under wine production. It would be a crime not to indulge in some wine tasting at one of the many tapas or wine bars dotted around the town.
