Established as a township in 1894, Montclair is in the county of Essex in New Jersey and its name in French means "clear mountain". Sitting a mere 12 miles from Manhattan, the city is easy to walk around and explore the 18 public parks and 2 nature preserves. This town is more of a "day trip" - when you have nothing better to do and are in the north area of New Jersey - than a full-on destination to while away numerous days. You will find some quirky restaurants and eclectic shopping to be had in the Church Street area to entertain you for a few hours.
There is the Montclair Art Museum (known as MAM) where you can actually see displays such as "Pumpkin Carving" - wink wink nudge nudge. If you are into gardening and flowers, then late spring is probably the best time to go to Montclair to see more than 3,000 irises blooming at the Presby Memorial Iris Gardens. In the off-season time, again there is a pumpkin related event at the Gardens Aglow festival. If you are into sports, then head to the Yogi Berra Museum and Learning Center on the Montclair State University campus where you can check out some baseball memorabilia and even catch a local game if you are lucky. The historic Wellmont Theater hosts numerous music and comedy shows throughout the year and there are quite a few art galleries dotted around the town to stroll in. There are a couple of historic homes such as the Nathaniel Crane House to walk through (if that is your idea of fun) or you can take a walk in one of the public parks with or without someone's dog, if you don't have your own.
If by some chance you happen to be in town on a Saturday morning, head to the Montclair Farmer's Market and rub shoulders with the locals.
