About Baguio

Sitting on Luzon Island of the Philippines, Baguio is a town in the mountains cloaked in resorts and universities. Established as a "hill station" by the Americans in the early 1900s, it was the only hill station of the United State's in Asia. It's the place to run to during the hot steamy summer months, as it has a cool climate being about 4810 ft. above sea level where mossy plants and orchids flourish. This is a major center for business, commerce and education with a population of about 345,366 inhabitants. Coworking venues have opened in the buzzing enclave of Baguio to cater to those running from the heat or the locals that never leave their "City of Pines", as it is known.

Unfortunately thousands of taxis, tricycles and jeepneys clog the streets that hold a burgeoning restaurant scene and a throbbing nightlife of mayhem. You have to run to the outskirts to appreciate the cool air and natural surroundings. Definitely a university town with one of the largest student populations in the whole of the Philippines (think about 250,000 of tech savvy youths), Baguio's main street is total chaos. This is the crossroads between the lowland settlers and hill-tribe culture in all its colorful glory. For backpackers looking for total bliss, it is the gateway to the north of Sagada, Banaue and Kalinga.

Not exactly a tech hub in the mountains, it does have its fair share of inventive souls who wish to stay on their own home ground rather than run off to a huge city. The Philippines has seen an unprecedented rise in the number of new and innovative businesses led by ambitious young entrepreneurs. The private sector plus the government is supporting startups with investment, creating incubation programs and providing mentorship. Coworking allows the creative youth of Baguio to gather en masse in collaborative bliss with the bonus of being able to use up excess energy in outdoor pursuits such as rock climbing or hiking when their goals seem impossible to achieve.
