Don't get too excited if you are planning on going to Hoofddorp, which is part of the Haarlemmermeer Polder (reclaimed land that is) in the north of Holland. Apparently there is not a lot to occupy the souls of this town. The town's name translated into English means "Head Village" and it is located about 25 minutes from Amsterdam.
Maybe the best time to be there is during the summer months, when there are some musical festivals happening. Apparently the city center is one huge shopping mall, but of nothing of note. The restaurants stack the chairs and oust any lingering patrons around the 10pm mark, so don't go looking for late night venues to grab a meal. There are 3 bars in the whole of the town and 1 disco that is open on a Friday and Saturday nights with a singles night every month on a Friday night. This is when the locals mob each other. You can go swimming in a "pond" or have a game of golf if the boredom gets too much; chasing a white ball might be a happening alternative.
If you want to learn about the draining and the history of the Haarlemmermeer from 1852, you can go to the Historisch Museum Haarlemmermeer to satisfy your curiosity about it.
