In the heart of São Paulo is Campinas, a massive hub of economic activity - particularly within the high-tech and IT sectors. It's home to branches of some huge global companies, such as IBM, Dell, Motorola, 3M, and more - in addition to top players in the automotive and petrochemical industries. There are also many research centers here, including the Brazilian Synchrotron Light Laboratory, Brazilian Nanotechnology National Laboratory, National Laboratory of Science and Technology of Bioethanol, and Brazilian Biosciences National Laboratory - plus the University of Campinas, voted the 2nd best in all of Latin America.
To relax and unwind, this city has no shortage of things to do and see. Visit the Cambuí neighborhood for plenty of restaurants and bars, and the area around the University's main campus is always bustling. If you have more time, take a day trip to the surrounding mountains for a hike with idyllic views, or visit one of the neighboring spa cities - yes, spa cities - of Serra Negra or Águas de Lindóia.
Be aware that violence and crime is rising in the city, although it's still a pretty safe area. Just keep in mind that around the local favelas, it's a good practice to dress more conservatively.
