About Giza

Famous for its ancient pyramids, technically the whole of Cairo sitting on the west bank of the Nile is Giza. If you want to bypass Cairo to walk in the footsteps of pharos on the edge of the desert at Giza, this is the town to head for. You will probably just come to Giza for a day trip from Cairo, but you can actually stay in Giza to get the desert sand up your nose for real.

Sitting on the Giza Plateau, this is one of the 7 Wonders of the World that everyone learnt about during school years and that our current technology cannot replicate leaving scientists, astronomers and archaeologists totally baffled. The iconic ancient monuments are wrapped forever in mystery and mythical folklore. The sight will leave you gob smacked. The Great Pyramid of Giza was actually used as the location for the "Prime Meridian" (reference point for determining a base longitude) during the late 1880s and today their towering presence is a constant reminder of the power and might of Egypt's historical rulers.

The area includes the ancient Egyptian royal mortuary dotted with sacred structures, the Sphinx and numerous other large pyramids and temples all built between 2589 and 2504 BC. Despite the fact that you will see so many photographs before you lay eyes on the real thing, it is definitely one of those sights that will linger with you long after you walk away. If you get the heebie-jeebies in confined places then you may want to give the narrow and dank corridors of the passages in the bowels of the pyramid a miss.

Make sure you check out the websites with all the tips and tricks of making sure you get your tickets to visit the pyramids, there are numerous on-line. But whatever you do, this is the perfect opportunity to jump a camel and play "tourist" for real.
