About Burlington

A regional college town, Burlington has the state's largest hospital, the University of Vermont Medical Center within its city limits. The first city to run completely on renewable energy in the United States, Burlington sits on the eastern shore of Lake Champlain near the Green Mountains in the maple syrup saturated state of Vermont. A mere 72 km south of the Canada-United States (Quebec-Vermont) border, this is the town that has its own Loch Ness monster named "Champ". It is where advertising billboards are illegal, as they are considered to be a blight on the landscape. The locals have a fiercely independent streak and support small-scale industry and farming. Historically a thriving lumbering and manufacturing center, the city was incorporated in 1865.

The car free space lined with shops in Church Street is a thriving hive of boutique shopping, cafes and restaurants, with many art galleries dotted around the town. If you want to grab a show whilst in Burlington, head to the Flynn Theater for a live performance or go to the Shelburne Museum, an open-air affair of 39 original buildings from different eras that even include an historic lake steamer. You can take a cruise on Lake Champlain complete with a non-stop babble of the Revolutionary War and other periods of the lake's history. If this doesn't appeal, get a feel of being on the lake by grabbing a ferry to cross to the other side. There is plenty of activity at Burlington's Church Street marketplace where cafes reign in a pseudo Italian piazza scene and sipping espresso outdoors is a great way to while away a few hours of people watching in what has been named one of the Great Public Spaces in America.

If you need a track to pound along in your runners, head to the Waterfront Park and rub shoulders with like-minded locals. For those of the more docile personality, it is the perfect place to recline on a rug with a load of picnic goodies within hand's reach.
