About Laveno Mombello

Sitting in the land that has more UNESCO world heritage sites than any other country in the world, the small town of Laveno-Mombello is the tourism capital on the eastern shores of Lake Maggiore, the Italian Lakes area in the Lombardy region of Italy.  About 75 km northwest of Milan, it is picturesque and quaint with a lakeside promenade dressed with porticoed buildings. From its marina it is possible to get a ferry to Intra on the Piedmont shore.  It was the bolthole for numerous armies as they trudged through history, beginning with the Romans and the Gauls.  Laveno-
Mombello has a mild climate in both summer and winter awash in Mediterranean vegetation and stunning scenery.

Lake Maggiore is the longest lake of the Italian Lakes with 3 islands known as the Borromean Islands worth exploring. Grab a ferryboat, private water taxi or hydrofoil to the cute fishing village of Isola Pescatori overflowing with traditional lake boats or go to Isola Bella where a baroque palace will have your jaw dropping. For stunning gardens go to Isole di Brissago and Isola Madre as well as the well-tendered gardens of Villa Taranto near Verbania.

Every second Sunday of each month you can fossick at "Fiera Labiena", a street-market where you can buy local arts and crafts or plenty of local tasty treats - think cheeses, olives, hand made pasta and breads - to quell any hunger pangs. The Spirit of Woodstock Festival is held at the end of July at Mirapuri and the Locarno International Film Festival featuring some of Europe's best directors and actors, is a taste of Hollywood in August.

Grab a cable car and head to the magic viewpoint of Mount Sasso del Ferro where you will be awe struck, not only by the view but watching the hang-gliders and paragliders swirling in the sky.  Make sure you visit the Civica Raccolta di Terraglie, showcasing the importance of Laveno's historical pottery making.

In the winter months you can ski the Alps or during the summer months go splashing with the locals in the lake, sail, windsurf, para sail or try some water skiing.  It's possible to rumble around on a mountain bike, have a bit of a trot on a horse in the mountains or simply go hiking through the amazing trails.
