Overflowing in architectural sites, masses of spas and army men with their families, Wiesbaden sits in the southwest of Hessen, Germany. It is the city that you will find a "Slow Time Cafe" where you don't pay for your caffeine hit but for how long you sit in a chair, a casino to gamble at and the famous wine area, Rheingau. Priscilla met Elvis here and the famous tennis star, John McEnroe was born here on a military base. Sitting at the foot of the Taunus Mountains, it was originally settled more than 2,000 years ago as a Roman outpost. Maybe they were looking for a bit of a "well being" experience, as the area is awash in hot thermal springs and the Romans set up the original bath-houses, obviously to heal their battle wounds. Wiesbaden is one of the oldest spa towns in Europe, 14 of the 26 hot springs are still bubbling away today. An elegant spa resort city cocooned in its charm, the streetscape is a testament to its historical past in its impressive architecture where you will find verdant parks to take time out in.
Take time to explore the remnants of the Aqueduct Heidenmauer, the Roman Fort from 6 AD (Latin phrase: anno domini - in the year of the Lord or the year he was born), the Schlossplatz (The Place Square) built in 1849 and the neoclassical Kurhaus Theater built in 1904. Do the cable car ride to get a panoramic view over the city or check out the Griechische Kapelle (The Russian Orthodox Church). You can go chasing castles on the banks of the Rhine, meander around the Old Town of narrow passages or raid the bank account and go shopping in the expensive domain of Wilhelmstraße Street.
If all of the above fails to interest, just vegetate at the Friedrichsbad Spa or the Kaiser-Friedrich-Therme and get a real traditional Roman bath experience.
