About Cooperstown

Known for the fact that it is home to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, and called "the village of museums", Cooperstown is in the county of Otsego, New York. This is where the locals walk to work (but not in the winter) and the author James Fenimore Cooper wrote the novel "The Last of the Mohicans", as well as other novels. The town is not named after him, but it is named for his father, William Cooper who founded the town in the late 1780s.

Befitting the town known for its museums, there is the Farmers' Museum where you can go back in time to rural village life in the 19th Century and the Fenimore Art Museum showcasing America's history through art and photography. Once upon a time there was even an Indian Museum, a Carriage and Harness Museum and The Woodland Museum that have now all closed. The Historic District of Cooperstown is the place to go walking for pre-1900 architectural sights such as Hyde Hall, considered to be one of the best representations of romantic classicism in America that was built in the early 1800s. From Georgian manors, to what were once private manor houses, estates and gardens, there is plenty to wonder around.

If you want to listen to some homegrown opera, then you should go to the Glimmerglass Opera at the Alice Busch Opera Theater.
