About Akron

With the locals known as "Akronites" and a city with nicknames such as "Rubber City" and "Rubber Capital of the World", you can guess that rubber features somewhere in the economy of this city.  General Tire, B.F. Goodrich, Firestone and Goodyear all had their companies in Akron, though only Goodyear still remains.  Sitting on the Little Cuyahoga River about 63 km south of Lake Erie, Akron is in the Great Lakes region of Ohio.

It is home to the National Hamburger Festival where you "bob for burgers" into a vat of ketchup, the Soap Box Derby and the Quaker Oats Company that fed the army soldiers during the Civil War.  Take note that it is illegal to dye or color a rabbit, chicks or ducklings, or to go fishing whilst drunk. Akron was the first city to use a police car (aka an electric wagon built in 1899) that maxed out at 16 mph and required recharging after every 30 miles.  But, they did beat Toyota by almost a century for the innovation.

You can actually get a degree in Corrosion Engineering at The University of Akron, the only university in America to offer the course. The university is also the only other place to get an Aerospace Systems degree outside of the U.S. Air Force Academy.  Alcoholics Anonymous began in Akron in 1935 and gossip has it that two local food vendors invented the ice cream cone and caramel corn.  Set amidst rolling hills and lush farmland, airships, blimps and zeppelins were manufactured at the Goodyear Airdock in Akron and it is considered to be one of the ten largest high tech company havens.

You can take a wander through the Akron Art Museum, gawk at exhibits of some of the world's greatest artists and designers at the Kent State University Museum, or go to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame & Museum.  If museums don't turn you on, then head to the Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens, the former home of the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, F.A. Seiberling.  If you are craving a bit of culture take in some music by the Cleveland Orchestra at Blossom Music Center or if jazz is more you, live jazz can be heard at the Blu Jazz in the Akron Historic Arts District.  Place a bet on your favorite horse at the Mahoning Valley Race Course or take to the outdoors for a bit of snowboarding or snow tubing at the Boston Mills/Brandywine Ski Resort.  There is Xtreme bowling at the AMF Hall of Fame Lanes and classical cars to drool over at the Vanton Classic Car Museum.

If none of the above appeals head to the Gervasi Vineyard and contemplate your navel whilst downing a few wines.
