About Reston
Designated a "backyard wildlife habitat" community, Reston was a purpose built city internationally known as a "planned community" in 1964. Now it is referred to as an "edge city" with 5 out of the 20 of the largest venture capital firms in the DC area, based in Reston. It serves as the headquarters for the North American command of the German armed forces; so imagine a lot of uniforms floating around. Sitting in Fairfax County, it is within the Washington DC metropolitan area. Consisting of 5 village centers of differing housing density, they are all dominated by a single one. No matter where you are, you will be within a half-mile walk from a commercial precinct or zone.
The town was held up to the spotlight and much media coverage in the newspapers as a revolutionary way to use land space, as it was the first modern post-war planned community in America. Even Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin of Apollo II space fame have walked its streets and had schools named after them. Master architects created Reston to be medium density in accordance with tight design controls. You can find all the necessary amenities one would wish for such as cafes, restaurants, shops, and commercial buildings etcetera in the town that almost sounds like something out of the movie "Stepford Wives".
The Lake Anne Plaza, the first area to be developed has swaths of wooded areas of wildflower meadows, streams to paddle in, bike paths, walking trails plus 4 large lakes to picnic around. The Reston Community Center is where you will find the local theater, an indoor heated swimming pool, ballroom and meeting rooms. There is a local farmer's market at the weekends and in the summer months you can take in one of the free concerts at Lake Anne Plaza. This is also where you can stretch your legs or pump the arm muscles with a bit of exercise either rowing a canoe, skimming along in a kayak or having a laugh on a paddleboat.
When the planned perfection gets too much to bear, head to chaotic Washington DC just 30 km up the road for a bit of vibrant confusion.
