Settled in the year 1535 by Portuguese colonists, Vitoria is a small island in the state of Espirito Santo. Rivers merge with the sea and there are 6 bridges connecting it to the mainland. With a history in agriculture and gold mining, coffee production soon took over. Draped in a surreal natural beauty, the city is on the coastline perched on a rocky outcrop within easy reach of the mountains of Espirito Santo.
A tad on the steamy side, Vitoria has a tropical savanna climate that is perfect for reclining on beautiful beaches with the Atlantic Ocean tickling your toes and plenty of opportunities to go scuba diving or to exert yourself with a game of beach volleyball. There are rainforests pulsating with native wildlife to explore, or you can take a jog through Praca dos Namorados. Vitoria is not the place to be between the months of October and January, unless you love the rain.
Vitoria is the perfect escape for those wishing to relax, eat, eat some more and explore. On this island with a sleepy town mentality there are plenty of restaurants to choose from that specialize in locally caught seafood and traditional beef dishes.
