About Oxford

Not to be confused by that other Oxford on the opposite side of the pond, Oxford, Mississippi has been named one of the Best 100 Small Towns in America. But don't let its size fool you - this town is steeped in culture and history. It's home to Ole Miss (The University of Mississippi, famous for admitting the first African American student in the U.S. in during the Civil Rights Movement, plus its massively thriving football team). And literary aficionados will know it as the hometown of author William Faulkner - he used Oxford as the model for the fictional town "Jefferson" in all of his novels.

If you look past the frat boys in pickup trucks and debutante sorority girls, you'll also find a burgeoning art scene in Oxford. Often referred to as the "Cultural Mecca of the South," Oxford is full of musicians, artists, and writers in the many coffee shops, bookstores, and outdoor spaces around town. Head to the Square in the center of town for the perfect mix of people watching, eclectic shopping, and a lively nighttime scene. And of course, the classic, down-home Southern cooking here is a must-try.

But thanks to the huge university presence in Oxford, the city is also a burgeoning hub of research and development. For example, at Ole Miss' School of Pharmacy, the National Center for Natural Products Research is the only place in the country that's federally licensed to grow marijuana for scientific research. Its Medical Center is where the first human lung transplant took place. And its Field Station laboratory concentrates on research surrounding sustainable freshwater ecosystems. Other areas of focus include intelligence and security, health sciences, and finance.
