About Grand Marais

-The gateway to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, Grand Marais is a quaint regional town overflowing with art galleries and home to The Dragon Boat Festival held annually in July (imagine flamboyant floating dragon shaped boats) and the Fisherman's Picnic (think mammoth fish fry potluck picnic) in August each year.

A small town in Cook County of Minnesota, Grand Marais is for the outdoor soul who thrives on trekking, boating and exploring. Definitely pack the thermal undies if you are going to be in the area during winter, as you don't want to freeze your personal bits off. The name when translated from French means "Great Marsh". Historically a fur trading settlement and a European immigrants' fishing camp, the little village sat on the banks of a small bay and harbor. This area is the real "up north" with magnificent scenery and chilly breezes wafting off Lake Superior, even in the height of summer months.

A hiker's paradise of trails through pristine wilderness or checking out gorges where campers can play in their tents scoffing on melting marshmallows oozing off a stick over a fire. There is a mysterious waterfall in Judge Magney State Park, where half the water cascades into the Brule River, whilst the other half drops into a cauldron and completely disappears like magic. Lake Superior is where to paddle a canoe or to spread the picnic rug on the foreshore for some chill out time contemplating your navel. There are plenty of quirky cafes and restaurants dotted around the town for when the hunger pangs strike or the need for an espresso arises.

Do remember that the town basically shuts down in the winter months.
