This is a village sitting in the town of Greenburgh, New York, on the eastern bank of the Hudson River. About 40 km north of Manhattan, the villages of Sleepy Hollow, Irvington and parts of Greenburgh surround Tarrytown. Known for its special events such at the Tarrytown Music Hall, the Hudson Valley Writers' Center and the place to really take in the local farmers' markets, it was home to the author of "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow", Washington Irving, who is now ensconced in the Sleepy Hallow Cemetery.

The country's biggest Halloween event is held annually in Tarrytown, the Great Jack O'Lantern Blaze, when you can see over 6,000 hand-carved pumpkins lit up with the backdrop of the mysterious looking Van Cortlandt Manor's 18th Century buildings and stunning riverside landscape. You have to watch out for the headless horseman if you choose to take a "haunted hayride" - just for a joke of course. It's all about getting your head chopped off here or other ghoulish happenings, so make sure you check out Jay Ghoul's House of Curiosities in a dark gothic mansion. Forget the fairytale spooks for a while and take a hike along the Old Croton Aqueduct that is a 26-mile trail meandering through parkland and old estates. The Rockefeller State Park Preserve has over a 1,000 acres to investigate however you want - think cross-country skiing, snowshoe slogging and sledding or in the summer, its great for hiking, bird spotting and even a spot of fishing. There are also 3 waterfront parks to stroll around with restaurants dotted on the perimeter to imbibe in a late afternoon aperitif when the sun goes down.
