While the city of Dubai is commonly known for its flashy skyscrapers and top-of-the-line shopping malls, the neighboring city of Sharjah in the UAE takes a more subtle approach to culture. Forming part of the Dubai-Sharjah-Ajman metropolitan area, Sharjah is the only emirate that overlooks the coastline of the Persian Gulf to one side and the Indian Ocean to the other. Ruled by the Al Qasimi dynasty since the 18th century, Sharjah is a thriving hub of culture and industry, contributing close to 7.4 percent of the UAE’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) alone.
Since the emirate is “dry,” meaning there is no alcohol available anywhere, some travelers may look to other cities for international exploration. But if you can handle a few days without a beer, Sharjah is home to some of the best museums and galleries in the entire country, along with many high-end professional workspaces. After all, Sharjah was deemed the Capital of Islamic Culture by UNESCO, meaning there is plenty to do, see, and explore after a day of coworking. With many stunning places of worship to visit, the Arabian Wildlife Center, the Al Majaz Waterfront, and the Heritage District, you’ll be able to get a real feel for the culture of this vast city while taking in all of these wonderful sites.
