About Newcastle Upon Tyne

Newcastle Upon Tyne is one of the big UK cities to have undergone a major revival in recent years, shrugging off the image of a gritty and dull city to become a very important cultural and artistic destination. Here you have access to a lot of new industries, including an up and coming science park which is already attracting all of the right attention.

It doesn’t look too bad either, with the River Tyne wending its way through the city streets. It’s a smaller city in terms of footprint than most other UK hubs, which is excellent for finding your way around – especially if you use the efficient public transport network. Those driving can often get a bit stuck either with the traffic jams or the one-way system, but the Metro trains are very reliable and will get you where you need to go. There’s even a hybrid electric bus service which is now running in parts of the city. Geordies are the local residents of the city, and if you stay here long enough you will find yourself picking up a bit of their twang. Their vocabulary may seem a mystery at first, with words like “howay”, “yous”, and “geet walla” turning conversations into a coded exchange, but you will soon get the hang of it. The melodic accent is very easy on the ears, and Geordies also have a reputation for being some of the friendliest people around. If you need a crash course, you can always sit on the couch and treat yourself to a binge watch of Geordie Shore, which is filmed here! There’s one thing you will definitely have to learn if you want to fit in, and that’s Newcastle United. The footie club is always underachieving, and you wouldn’t compare it to the likes of the spectacularly successful Man United or Arsenal. But the fans would die for their team, and it is likely to be the topic of many a pub conversation.

Geordies tend to be really optimistic in their worldview, perhaps because they have supported a rubbish team for so long. This means the work ethic and environment here can be really rewarding. It’s hard to get down about work when you have positive people around you, and even the sound of someone coming in to your coworking space and greeting you as their “pet” can cheer you up enough to motivate better work. Just make sure you don’t end up chatting the day away rather than getting anything done!If you don’t make your goals, don’t worry – Newcastle is a very inexpensive city compared to other areas of the UK, and you can grab a beer and a takeaway without breaking your budget. That means networking is easier too, as heading out to lunch or dinner with a potential client won’t stress out your bank manager.
