About Blagoevgrad
A city in southwestern Bulgaria, Blagoevgrad sits on the banks of the Blagoevgradska Bistritsa River with a population of around the 71,000 mark. Its climate has a strong Mediterranean influence with long dry summers and brief mild winters. Known for its stunning natural beauty, it is a busy and fast growing city that is the economic and cultural center of southwestern Bulgaria. Located at the foot of the Rila Mountains and only 101km from the city of Sofia, it has a pedestrian only downtown cloaked in 19th Century architecture and now has coworking venues opening their doors onto the streets.
Bulgaria is a country that has been trampled over by the Mongols, the Ottomans, the Nazis and the Communists, so there are plenty of sights to check out if you are not a local. The city is famous for its nightlife, probably due to its student population attending one of its 2 universities, the American University of Bulgaria and the South-West University "Neofit Rilski" and the fact that the main campus for the American University of Bulgaria is sitting in the heart of the city. The old town can be found in the Varosha area with its distinct Bulgarian architecture and is where you want to be sitting in a cafe watching the passing parade as you slurp on your coffee.
Blagoevgrad is not a tech hub, but it does have its fair share of intrepid souls forming startup communities, incubators and a growing entrepreneurial spirit happening. Bulgaria along with many other countries in Europe are trying to establish themselves as secondary tech hubs with new regulations favourable to startups and an infusion of public money in the hope that the young generation will stay at home rather than head to say London, Paris or Berlin. Coworking spaces are doing their bit to support these innovative individuals and giving them somewhere to gather en masse to collaborate with likeminded souls.
