About Yarmouth

Sitting in a prime location on the banks of the Royal River that empties into Casco Bay of the Atlantic Ocean, Yarmouth is a mere 12 miles from the eclectic and fun city of Portland. A harbor city that with a traditional history of shipbuilding between 1818 and the 1870s, there were nearly 60 mills between 1674 and 1931 due to the power of the Royal River's 4 waterfalls. Human habitation can be traced back to about 2,000BC with settlers arriving during the years of Indian attacking mayhem in 1636. The first settlers fled in the wake of an Indian attack, only to return in 1715 and to start resettlement of the area. Amongst the new settlers were descendants of the Plymouth Pilgrims. The town split into 2, Yarmouth and North Yarmouth, because of constant bickering between the farm-based inland and the coastal maritime community.

Today it is all about gastronomy with an average of one sit down restaurant per square mile of land area. Feasting on clams happens during the Yarmouth Clam Festival each July long weekend, but it is a food sport that can be indulged in throughout the year without the addition of 120,000 clam lovers invading the city. The Royal River Park and walkway are the perfect places to take a stroll, have a picnic and contemplate your navel in quiet solitude. There is a marina to explore for the boat lovers and hidden coves to spy on shy seals and sea birds. There are over 100 notable buildings in the town for either the history buffs or the architectural fans to look at, such as Cushing and Hannah Prince House (Federal-style farmhouse), the Captain S C Blanchard House (an elaborate Italianate residence) and Mitchell House with its unusual steeply pitched hip roof.

And then there are the 4 waterfalls of the Royal River: The First Falls, The Second Falls, the Third Falls and the Fourth Falls. All are distinctly different and all deserve the time to explore them if for no other reason than to go for splash in the water.
