About Auckland
Auckland sits on a magma source located 100 km beneath the city feeding over 50 volcanoes. It is where Karekare Beach is located; the location used in the film "The Piano". Also known as the "City of Sails" as it has the world's highest boat ownership per capita, it is a magnet for sailing fiends. Home to the world's largest Polynesian population with about 28% of its locals being of Pacific origin, Auckland is a dynamic and vibrant city sitting amidst stunning scenery. Based around 2 harbors that are swamped with super yachts, cafes, restaurants and bars, Auckland is on the north island of New Zealand.
Meander through the city's oldest park based around an extinct volcano or go to the iconic Sky Tower to get stupendous views of Viaduct Harbor. Walk the "Coast to Coast" track that is 16 km long and will take you from the Pacific Ocean to the Tasman Sea. For the adrenalin junkies there are 4 wheel-driving adventures in the dunes, bungee jumping from the Auckland Bridge, or you can just climb the harbor bridge if you are looking for a rush. You can take to the rocky streams in the canyons or abseil down waterfalls at Waitakere Ranges. Ride a bike or a horse along white sand beaches or catch a wave at the black sands beach of Piha. It is possible to hike the wetlands and mangroves at Pigeon Mountain or take the hard trek up Mount Rotskill to view a few craters along the way.
When the energy runs out settle for a meander through the Auckland Art Gallery "Toi o Tamaki" or the Auckland Museum. You can go on a whale and dolphin tour in the Hauraki Gulf or forget being on the water and simply visit the Auckland Zoo. When the shopping bug kicks in head to the Britomart Precinct in the most historic part of the city for lush designer boutiques, funky cafes and bars. On the subject of shopping, make sure you go to the Otara Markets at the weekend for some live music and traditional crafts. Don't forget to cruise along the promenade and make a beeline for K'road where you can party all night at one of the clubs.
