In the 1980s and early 1990s Medellín was one of the most dangerous cities in the world due to the lawless misbehavior of the Medellín Cartel who dabbled somewhat unmercifully in the drug trade, murder and kidnapping.  Since the death of Pablo Escobar the infamous drug lord and the subsequent disbanding of the cartel in the mid 1990s, the city has wiped its face clean and is no longer the bearer of such a title.

Today Medellín is all about annual flower festivals, getting Zen in the barefoot park of Parque de los Pies Descalzos or sipping coffee in one of the many funky outdoor cafes.  You can stroll slowly down Carabobo Street in the city's heart or hire a bicycle for a day pedaling around with the locals on every Sunday when most of the streets are shut down to motor vehicles.  You can even grab a free bike to ride at Medellin or Arvi Park.

A vibrant nightlife and cultural scene has replaced the murder and mayhem, with 6 universities generating a young pulsating vibe. There are museums and art galleries to explore, a bohemian gathering point at the square "The Parque Periodista" where the music is anything from reggae to rock and a handcraft bazaar at Parque San Antonio that is worth investigating. If you like a bit of street theater, then you should go to La Playa promenade at night for a show with a difference that you don't have to pay for.  To exercise the brain or the body, you can learn to speak Spanish at one of the many schools around, or go to a tango or salsa school to wear off that traditional breakfast of baked corn arepas that is drizzled with butter and white cheese.
