About Charlottesville

Locally known as "Hoo-Ville", Charlottesville is named after the British Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz.  It has 18 distinctive neighborhoods and is the heart of the Charlottesville metropolitan area that includes Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene and Nelson counties.  The 2 presidents, Thomas Jefferson and James Monroe both served as Governors of Virginia and lived in Charlottesville.  A mere 3 miles from Charlottesville is the UNESCO World Heritage Site of "Monticello" that attracts 500,000 tourists annually.

Relatively small in size, you will find an historic district to stroll around for the history buffs.  The stunningly beautiful Shenandoah National Park has rolling mountains and a plethora of hiking trails to explore.  If you don't want to hike, the Skyline Drive is a picturesque drive running the length of the park and winds endlessly through thick forest. If you like being in a car then take to the road again and do the Blue Ridge Parkway south to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, but that is some 755km so you may need more than a picnic lunch for that venture.  These 2 scenic drives meet 35km from downtown Charlottesville.

Home to one of the longest outdoor pedestrian malls in the country, Downtown Mall, there is sufficient shops and restaurants to keep the most restless soul active in one way or another.  The Paramount Theater is where you should head to see a live concert or a show with the Virginia Discovery Museum waiting to show you what it has, when you are in the mood.  You should head to Court Square, the original heart of Charlottesville, where you can gawk at some historical architecture in the buildings from the 1760s.  For the scholarly mind, go to the University of Virginia where 20,000 students attend.  If you want to hang out with the college kids and inhale some of their enthusiasm for all things wicked, go to "The Corner" area that is overflowing with bars and nightclubs.

If all else fails, check out any one or all of the 22 vintners on the Monticello Wine Trail, where your palate will be very happy lingering for a while.
