Silicon Valley's largest city, San Jose, is home to over 6,600 technology companies making it the most concentrated area of technology expertise in the world. Considered to be California's oldest civilian settlement, it was actually used as a setting in the opening scenes of the movie "Jurassic Park".
There are no beaches here but plenty of college degrees, as over half the city's adults hold a degree of some sort or another. The city, surrounded by the rolling hills of Silicon Valley, is literally overflowing with museums such as the Tech Museum of Innovation. There are architectural landmarks on the National Register of Historic Places especially in the Downtown Historic Center and the SAP Center that holds an event on average every two days and sells the most tickets to non-sporting events in the whole of the United States.
Beginning as a small farming community, San Jose had a growth spurt with the return of the veterans from World War II. The 1950s and 1960s saw the emergence of electronics and high-technology industries, whereupon it became a buzzing metropolitan area. It is today the largest city in Northern California with the apt nickname of the "Capital of Silicon Valley".
