About Leavenworth

Originally a small timber community at the beginning of the 1900s, the town began to whither when the railroad changed its course and head office in the 1920's. In the 1960's two enterprising businessmen gave new life to this floundering town by turning it into a Bavarian enclave and a tourist theme town destination. The whole town center was remodeled as a Bavarian village. Sitting in the country of Chelan, its population is only about 2,000 residents. As you can imagine, Oktoberfest is the best time to be in Leavenworth. The streets run up and down in a cuckoo clock style of architecture and quirky mayhem of wooden balconies and two-toned timber framed houses that could have been uprooted from the European Alps. It is awash in beer drinking, cozy fireplaces and a culture of making merry.

Being a town intent on capturing the heart of a tourist, it is no wonder that festivals from autumn leaves to ice, reign in this faux Alps village. There is the Bavarian Ice Fest in January, the Ale Feast in April, Maifest of course in May complete with "pole" dancing of the accepted kind, Icicle Creek Chamber Music Festival in July, the Washington State Autumn Leaf Festival in September, Oktoberfest in October and the amazing sight of the Christmas Lighting Fest in December. There are plenty of Gingerbread men to scoff and jugs of beer to chug down.

You don't need to meander far in this town to come across the shops or cafes to keep you entertained and for those that don't want to break the bank balance, there are the beckoning mountains to explore. For a chuckle you should head to the Leavenworth Nutcracker Museum where you can gawk at nutcrackers from around the world. For the pseudo golfer there is the Enzian Falls Championship Putting course complete with wandering goats. You can even have a picnic at Icicle Creek after looking at the Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery. Summer time is perfect for tubing or rafting on the Wenatchee River and hiking or mountain biking through the surrounding forests. In the winter you are in a white wonderland for cross-country skiing and snowboarding.
